My Experience as a Blue Cross Volunteer
The cause of animal rights and welfare is the most difficult and totally thankless mission in India. I am not a trained professional. Whatever little I have achieved as a volunteer from the year 2000, is mainly due to the encouragement and the instant positive response I continue to receive from the Blue Cross of Hyderabad an organization which is the only refuge for animals in every type of need. Without Blue Cross, those who want to take to the cause of animals have nowhere to go.

It was in 1999 that my sister, Shreya, had found a vulture chick which was blind. By then, injured or orphaned puppies, kittens and pigeons were a regular at our house. But we simply didn't know what to feed a vulture. Since vultures were considered inauspicious we weren't allowed to bring it inside the house. That was the first time we called the Blue Cross of Hyderabad and were informed that the ambulance would pick it up the next day. It was exciting for both of us, I was 11 and Shreya was just 8-years-old. We promptly missed school that day, to witness the whole thing. Much to our joy, a white trolley with the Blue Cross symbol turned into our lane, halted in front of our gate and picked the bird! We have come a long way since then. While volunteering for Blue Cross, I have grown as an animal lover. De-worming puppies, getting them adopted, getting dogs in my area spayed, attending accident cases to counselling, cruelty cases, technical rescues, awareness programmes, you name it and I have got an opportunity to do it!
My experience of volunteering with Blue Cross cannot just be summed up in an essay. It goes above and beyond anything I'd ever thought being involved with animals was going to be. My personal account of rescue missions I've been a part of sometimes amaze me and at the same time, the fact that these animals, who cannot talk, have so much love for the two legged creatures (I mean us, humans), that insist upon mistreating them, humbles me.
All in all, I'm extremely proud to be with an organisation like Blue Cross of Hyderabad and thank them sincerely for giving me the opportunity to do what I'm so passionate about!
Nita has received well-deserved appreciation for her work in responding immediately and rescuing a cat successfully.

Well, I have been a volunteer of Blue Cross for the past seven years. I am an animal rescuer. Earlier, I used to do rescues from my area given by Blue Cross and am volunteering on a regular basis for the last eight months in the Blue Cross premises itself. Here, I play with pups and kittens groom them and attend calls, counsel people who have come to abandon their pets and also counsel people who want to adopt pups / kittens. The experience is very good because people understand the importance of pets in daily life. It helps give me lots of experience; for example - how to deal with different mentalities, gain more knowledge on the symptoms of different diseases for different animals. I am very happy to be a part of the work I am doing for animals. Thanks for giving me the opportunity of sharing.
