Last year Blue Cross sterilized 3,648 stray, community (stray) dogs and vaccinated 4036 dogs against Rabies. Revaccination against Rabies was taken up in areas that were covered by the ABC/AR during previous years. We are happy to note that there were no recorded incidents or reports of Rabies in these areas.

What is ABC/AR?
The Animal Birth Control /Anti-Rabies (ABC/AR) programme is the most effective, sensible and humane known method of animal and rabies control recommended by the W.H.O. It has yielded tremendous results in controlling rabies in developing countries and is not simply a humane alternative.

Why is extermination of stray dogs not an option?
Killing of stray dogs has not helped reduce stray population nor contain rabies because we have a system of external garbage disposal that breeds stray animals. A majority of Indians do not want community dogs to be killed. By law extermination is not permitted. In fact, it is noted that the indiscriminate killing of animals alone can prove to be dangerous in a rabies prone country.

Why Killing dogs does not work?
Dogs are territorial by nature and when dogs of an area are killed, a new pack of dogs enters the area as there is food available. The new dogs are extremely aggressive in nature because they've invaded new territory. They may be diseased, ready to reproduce and extremely hostile .

Instead of extermination the more scientific solution is Animal Birth Control and Anti-Rabies which involves:

•	Catching stray dogs of an area and segregating the animals.
•	Only diseased dogs are humanely destroyed.
•	The remaining healthy and friendly dogs are sterilized and immunized against rabies and returned to their respective areas where they live out the rest of their natural lives helping the community.

Rabies Control: According to a W.H.O. report expert committee set up in 1992, when 75% or more of the dog population has been immunized against rabies, the disease can be controlled. Immunization alone is considered the method for controlling rabies. The immunized dogs create disease free zones and act as barriers to the spread of Rabies.

Cost Effective: Crores of rupees are spend on post bite vaccinations. Cost of post bite rabies treatment after ABC/AR comes down drastically. If 3/4th of the dog population can be tackled with ABC/AR, the entire exercise of catching and killing dogs will become unnecessary and will not call for any more expenditure.

You can make a difference by calling your Municipal Dog Pound and asking for ABC/AR in your locality. You can also individually initiate an ABC effort in your own community – as this is the Law! Call us for guidance.
