Adoption of Homeless Animals
We at Blue Cross Hyderabad, are committed to promoting the adoption of indigenous mix breed Indian dogs as part of our mission to bring down the number of homeless animals.
Dogs are known as man's best friend for the following reasons:
| • |
They are always happy to see you |
| • |
They do not judge you by your success at work |
| • |
They are satisfied with whatever food you give them |
| • |
They do not expect you to remember their birthdays |
| • |
They will forgive you for playing with other dogs. |
| • |
They will not complain if you are not properly dressed |
| • |
They give you unconditional love and service |
| • |
They will not judge you by your looks or abilities |
|
Some say God made the dog in his image (God -- doG) to remind man of his love!
Formalities:
If you are reading this page, it means you are already considering bringing a dog into your family. We congratulate you and at the same time wish you to ask yourself the following questions before you go ahead:
| • |
Can I afford to properly maintain a dog? Vaccinations, food, sterilisation and visits to a veterinary doctor. |
| • |
Do I have the space to keep a dog? |
| • |
Do I have time to devote to a dog? To exercise it daily, to clean up after it, to prepare its food, to play with it etc. |
| • |
Will I continue to love and keep my dog after I get married, if I change jobs, if I change houses? |
| • |
Will my spouse/ parents/ landlord/ roommate accept my dog? |
|

Adopting An Adult Dog
While we are keen for Puppies to leave the Shelter as quickly as possible and get into good homes, a lot of thought goes into the adoption of an adult dog, which is why we interview prospective owners. (Contact the Office for our Counsellor to Interview.)
The criteria are:
- Space for the adult dog and suitability of space - to be kept clean, shady, and ventilated, and the dog never tied up all day.
- Time available for a pet on the part of the owner; the support system if the owner is out at work
- Affordability to feed and cover the animal's requirements on a monthly basis.
- The ages of children in the family- families with small children are not advised to adopt adult dogs.
- Whether everyone in the family enjoys dogs, knows how to behave around dogs, and what to do if there is a problem.
- Where will the dog go when the family goes on holiday,to weddings etc. Do they know about Kennels and costs?
- (Blue Cross of Hyderabad has no Dog Kennelling Service)
Caring for an abandoned adult dog:
All the above factors affect the well being of an animal which has suffered abandonment. Getting a dog to live in the hands of untrained servants is unacceptable. Proper training for domestic staff looking after animals is a must. We try to provide as much information as we can on the history, health, personality quirks, likes and dislikes of the dog from it's previous owners - as all dogs are indeed individuals and adult dogs must be respected for the personalities.
